Introducing the new editor - Philip Mong'are Achoki
Posted by Philip Mong'are Achoki on 2024-11-27
Hi there, my name is Philip Achoki, and I am the new Essex Student Journal Editor for 2024/2025. I am a PhD (Management) student at the Business School. My research explores AI skills development in Sub-Saharan Africa using decolonial lens. I originally hail from Kenya although I have recently spent a few years in the Philippines, where I acquired my master’s degree. This multi-cultural exposure and experience have enabled me to develop the spirit of a global citizen.
Having stepped into this role in mid-September, it’s been a couple weeks of settling in and getting my hands on the deck. Although a short period, it has been fulfilling to see a few papers published and I look forward facilitating the publishing of even more papers this year.
The journal has benefited tremendously from the work of previous editors and the entire ESJ Team (including the editorial board and the advisory board). This has been reflected in the upward trend in terms of the submissions received and papers published in the past few years. Building on this success, I seek to contribute towards taking the journal a step ahead and facilitating the process of empowering more students through the publishing or peer-reviewing experience.
As part of the Essex student community, whether you are an undergraduate, a master’s (PGT) student, or a PGR student, you are instrumental to the success of this journal. If you are an undergraduate or master’s student, you can consider submitting any piece of academic writing (essays, research papers, case studies, academic blog posts, conference papers, reviews etc.) or creative writing in the form of short fiction or poetry once we open submissions in March 2025. You can find more information and guidance here. As you work on your course requirements or research, keep in mind that you can convert them into publications and enhance your academic portfolio! If you would like us to contact you when submissions reopen, please complete this quick form.
If you are a PGR student, join our team of reviewers by signing up here. Don’t forget to include your research interest to ensure we assign you papers that align with your interests. If you are already a reviewer, you can help us spread the word to your PGR friends and encourage them to be reviewers and develop the peer-reviewing skills and experiences that are fundamental in academia.
We have several other events lined up for you including the Student Journal Conference that will take place in April 2025. We shall communicate regarding it and other events in due course.
Feel free to contact us at journal@essex.ac.uk if you have any questions or suggestions that can help us improve.
Let us make this year beautiful together!
