Editorial Process
The editorial and publishing process is overseen by the current Student Journal Editor and supported by the Editorial Board.
The Student Journal Editor is recruited annually from current postgraduate research students at the University of Essex. They ensure new submissions fit the scope and criteria of the Journal, provide feedback to authors, assign and oversee peer reviewers (see below), and take the submission through copyediting and typesetting, before finally publishing the finished work.
An author-facing version of this process is available as a visual guide.
The Editorial Board assists with this process, for example by stepping in when the Editor is unavailable or discussing submissions.
Information about the current editor and editorial board is available on our team information page.
Peer Review
All content published by the Essex Student Journal is peer reviewed, except for editorials and news stories.
Peer review is conducted by University of Essex postgraduate research students. Current Essex PGRs can volunteer online. The journal operates a double-blind peer review policy, meaning that the Editor selects reviewers and neither the author nor the reviewer will be aware of each other's identities. Reviews are kept anonymous to authors and not posted with the final publications.
The final decision on accepting/publishing a paper is made by the Editor but informed by peer reviewer comments.
The Journal aims to progress publications through peer review as soon as possible, but anticipates delays due to remaining flexible to the schedules of our student authors and reviewers.
