We're looking for current University of Essex PGR (postgraduate research) students to volunteer as an Editor for the Essex Student Journal.

This will be a great opportunity for any Essex PGRs interested in developing new skills, and gaining transferable first-hand experiences of academic publishing.

What will you gain?

  • Experience editing a peer reviewed diamond open access journal.
  • Specific skills in academic editing, copyediting, and typesetting.
  • Transferable skills such as team work, digital skills, and communication.
  • The chance to publish your own Editorial piece that will be indexed in Google Scholar.
  • A great addition to your CV.
  • SU benefits.

What are we looking for?

  • A current Essex PGR student.
  • Someone who is reliable, and has strong written communication skills and good attention to detail.
  • Flexibility, with the capacity to dedicate around 8 hours per week to the role.

How will the role work?

  • We're looking for two to three volunteers who can work together to edit Volume 17 of the Essex Student Journal, with the potential to edit additional special issues.
  • The role can be carried out either in person at our Colchester campus, or online.
  • You'll be supported by our Essex Student Journal manager, and full training will be provided.
  • We're looking for the volunteer editors to work with us for the remainder of the 2025/26 academic year, and through the Summer vacation if possible.

What do I need to do?

  • If you are interested, please email journal@essex.ac.uk with a 100-250 word statement explaining why you would like to volunteer as one of our Editors.
  • The closing date is 9am on Monday 9 February.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact journal@essex.ac.uk.

We look forward to hearing from you!
